Abstract
This exploratory case study examines the role of distance-learning technologies in shaping instructional practices within gender-separated higher education in Saudi Arabia, a context seldom explored in the global literature on educational technology. Drawing on Sociocultural Theory, the study analyzes how Internet- and Ethernet-based videoconferencing platforms facilitate access, interaction, and engagement for female students taught remotely by male professors, a practice rooted in cultural norms of gender separation. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with students, faculty, and administrative staff, classroom observations, and review of institutional documents. The data were analyzed using direct interpretation and categorical aggregation. The findings show that internet-based platforms improve accessibility, flexibility, and inclusivity, especially for women managing academic, work, and family responsibilities. However, challenges persist, such as limited options for synchronous interaction, restrictions on experiential learning, and inconsistent implementation across departments. Situated within Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 framework, the study demonstrates how technology can serve as a culturally responsive mediational tool that bridges innovation and tradition. By highlighting an underrepresented context, this research adds to international discussions on equity, digital pedagogy, and the sociocultural adaptation of technology in higher education.
